Prepare: Seasonal self care to support us through Winter

And just like that, Summer is over...

Hello Autumn

Hello crisp morning walks with leaves crunching beneath our feet and scarves wrapped tightly around us. Hello beautiful, grounding, smell of earth and the stunning colours of the trees. Hello bonfires and pumpkins

Whether you love it or not, you cannot deny the change in weather and sunlight the Autumnal period brings and the effect this can have on our physical and mental wellbeing. This transition from Summer to Autumn can be a challenge. The knowing that 'Winter is coming' can be a difficult realisation. Whilst it is only the beginning of the yin season, it can be an ideal time to start preparing for the cold, dark, wet, Winter that lies ahead, especially if you are one of the many who struggle with this time of the year.

With this in mind, I've decided to offer an additional workshop in November to help prepare ourselves for this seasonal change. An Autumnal self care practice. I'll be drawing on my Ayurveda training, yoga, the cognitive behavioural therapy inspired training I've taken through my work and my own passion for cyclical living. This session will include seasonally themed yoga, followed with a short talk on the Ayurvedic approach to Autumn and Winter. I will invite you all to journal during this session, with prompts to pause and reflect on how we can live a more cyclical life in tune with the natural world, as well as the opportunity to create a Seasonal Self Care Plan.

When: Sunday 6th of November, 1630-1830

MANIFEST

workshop images (1).jpg

The beginning of the New Year is thought of as a time to acquire new, often short lived, habits and hobbies. Ones that seek to "improve" us in some way, again highlighting the societal attitude we are not enough. What if, instead, we used the energetic shift of a new year to focus on what we already have and, with gratitude and positivity, openly invite abundance into our lives?

Building upon our sell-out U R ENOUGH workshops, MANIFEST delves into appreciating oneself and reaping what is sown in life's journey. Embodiment of faith and optimism can lead to more positive things to seek us out.

Lena introduces the workshop with a Forrest-Inspired yoga practice, themed to cultivate a reminder of our richly plentiful self-worth. After the break, Hannah will lead you through a guided meditation, that includes journaling exercises to assimilate the creative ideas that have surfaced from the asana practice. We will end with a luscious Yoga Nidra to create space, thus allowing the body and mind to relax fully and uptake all the wonders of the day.

Zhi- A Yin Yoga & Cupping Workshop

workshop images (15).png

"Zhi" defn: The shen/spirit related to the Kidney system. It is the minister of will, effort and perseverance.

Blending Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) with yoga has become commonplace and is growing in popularity. Combining these 2 systems is especially relatable in the season of winter as TCM provides a beautiful model to explain the importance of slowing down and conserving Jing (life essence). However to fully support the Kidneys (Zang organ system related to winter), it is not enough simply to do less. Excessive sedantary activities can lead to stagnation of Qi, creating a frustrated Liver for the coming of spring. Afterall, there is no Yin without Yang - an expert balance of both is required for optimal health.

Join Hannah and Lena for a relaxing and rejuvenating evening of Yin Yoga, cupping and self massage.

A range of complimentary delicious homemade refreshments (including mince pies and mulled wine) will be offered at the end of class.

Cost: £25
Date and Time: Friday 31st January, 7.00 - 9.00 pm
Location: Lane Yoga, Edinburgh

Hannah is a Yin and Hatha yoga teacher specialising in Mental Health.
Lena is a Forrest and Hatha yoga teacher who has over 15 years clinical experience as a TCM acupuncturist.

Together they are DAO Yoga. Their teaching is not centred around the visually aesthetic, gymnastic- style yoga postures, but on the nurturing and deeper aspects of yoga. Suitable for all levels, this yogi pair will hold space for you as they guide you through the subtle artistry of this very special ancient sacred practice.

U R Enough at Christmas

u r ENOUGH.jpg

Back by popular demand, our U R ENOUGH at Christmas. This time, in the beautiful space at Beetroot Sauvage.

Christmas- cinnamon cookies baking in the oven, fairy lights twinkling, carol singing. Family obligations, extra housework, crazy shopping and meeting deadlines -the festive season can be a magical yet fraught time.

How often does our inner critic tell us that we are not doing enough at Christmas; not spending enough; not socialising enough; not being enough for our families? These self-mutilating, habitual thoughts force us to plough on through in a determined struggle to complete endless to-do lists. BUT, is the cost worth it? We ignore our bodies plea’s for rest in a desperate attempt to prevent feelings of inadequacy emerging.

In Chinese Medicine theory, the winter is the time for dormancy, an opportunity to refuel for the brighter months. Overlooking these natural feelings leads to colds, flu, stress.

Hannah and Lena return to nourish, to care, to hold space and to remind you not to sacrifice your own essential needs for others. This Yuletide season, give your loved ones and yourself the most precious gift of all - presence over presents.

Join us for our Christmas special. Four hours to escape the festive madness filled with yoga, massage and mince pies.

Harmonise: an autumnal yoga retreat

workshop images (5).png

Nowadays, terms like “Self-care”, “Mindfulness” and “Hygge” have become commonplace in our modern culture as people yearn for simpler times. This nostalgia is a wonderful catalyst for positive change as it draws our focus away from glamorising “busyness” (and potentially burnout) to a presence that will cultivate healthy longevity. However, how do we embody this? Furthermore, how do we move between seasons? So much emphasis is placed on the height of these phases: from basking in the warmth of the summer sun or stiffening against the harshness of the winter freeze. How would it feel to prepare for the season ahead during the transitional period and celebrate it’s energetic shift? Hence, preventing physical or mental illness associated with the change?

Our autumnal retreat will be a unique offering to prepare ourselves for the challenges and hibernation of the darker months. A blessed time for rest, recuperation and inner knowing. Drawing on elements of TCM, Ayurvedic Practices and the healing power of nature, we will spend time nourishing our bodies, supporting our immune systems and learning seasonal self care techniques. You will be encouraged to slow down and create some much needed space away from the demands of daily life.

what to expect

With arrival from 4pm on Friday, our weekend will commence with an opening ceremony before a light dinner.

Each morning will start a self serve breakfast and coffee, followed by our yoga workshops.

On Saturday afternoon, Lena will lead a nature meander within the spectacular 60 acres of ground surrounding The Comb. With a qualification in foraging, there may be some tasty late autumn treasures awaiting to be picked! There will be discussion seasonal eating and TCM.

On Sunday, we will delve deeper by exploring methods of self-care for autumn and winter by: demonstrating the ancient art and science of cupping; self massage methods; and Aromatherapy.

Each evening will end with a blissful restorative practice to send you into deep and rejuvenating sleep.

The retreat is set in the heart of the Northumberland Dark Sky Park making our location exemplary for star gazing. Weather dependent, we intend to take advantage of this one evening in front of an outdoor open fire. Under the canopy of the cosmos, there will also be the option of an evening meditation or a gentle Qi Gong practice.

The weekend will close at 2pm on Sunday.

Anchor Your Shen

workshop images (12).png

Lena and Hannah invite you to join them for the 3rd workshop in the Elemental Healing Series.

Last summer was the most luscious and balmiest that we had experienced in years. Trees were dripping in fruity treasures of cherries, apples, pears and plums. Golden raspberry canes and loganberry bushes hung heavy with their ruby jewels. People ambled along leisurely without any rush, lingering to greet friends in the street. Indeed, our bodies naturally rejoice in the height of this season.

However as with all good things, imbalances can occur. Summer corresponds to the Heart organ system in TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) and is housed in the chest with it’s neighbour, the Lungs. The Heart also houses the “Shen” or our divine spirit. Not only is this is our consciousness that gives us joy, excitement, and the ability to find fun in life; it also gives us our connection to compassion and spiritual growth. However, the Heart is particularly sensitive to Heat and disharmonies may lead to mania, agitation, anxiety, insomnia, night sweats and feeling easily bothered by others.

Our workshop is designed to soothe the Heart by grounding the spirit with mediation, clearing excess Heat/Fire with a sweaty Vinyasa Flow, before cooling down with a blissful Yin sequence to support chest Qi.

Refreshments and mini head massage included: £25
